It is simple to check if the weight on your axles is below the legal limit (which varies per state). Unfortunately it doesn't matter if your cargo is actually overweight. I modded one trailer to weigh 70 tons the other day and the weigh station just let me pass with it. A Pre-Pass or it tells you you need to enter the weigh station, you'll drive over a set of plates, which will check your weight. If you get the bypass there, you will proceed to the bypass lane and exit the weigh station. If you don't get the bypass, you need to pull onto the scale to get weighed.
